Hey how’s it going guys
So I work at Myspace UK, and we know that Designer Mag is a site where people who dig good music come to find out about gigs and that. I just thought I’d offer up a little info about this big competition we’re doing this year to win a free gig with Elliot Minor. I’m sure most of you know these guys, but they’re really taking some big strides in reaching to a wider audience, and they’re set to break out big time in 2009. Blending strong vocals with their own brand of classical rock music, this is a band that make some seriously good records.
The competition itself part of the School Invasions tour where we’ll be putting on 5 amazing parties with the band in 5 schools across the country. You must earn votes to win, and if your school has the most votes in your region, blam, Elliot Minor will be yours. It’s pretty simple and easy, just get on www.myspace.com/schoolinvasions and vote for your school. Voting ends on March 27th with the tour taking place on April 27th – May 1st 2009. So if you wanna be in with a chance, the time is now to round up as many votes as you can.
All the expenses are covered by us, and there’ll be free packs with tshirts, bags, badges & posters handed out. Oh and just to let you know, this competition is strictly for 13 – 18 year olds. It’s going to be huge, so why not get involved? For more information, just visit our page.
Re: REAL 1ST UNSIGNED BAND TO HAVE A UK TOP 40 SIN « Result #5 on Feb 11, 2009, 1:43am »
I have just stumbled on this and find it really interesting, so I thought I would put my 2 cents in, so at least you can hear the details from this side before making your minds up. I run a company called www.dittomusic.com; we distribute thousands of artists across over 700 stores . Uniquely we help them with chart registration by handling their Catco and PPL and releasing them through our network of labels. We worked with Koopa on the single “Blag Steal and Borrow” We had known Koopa a while as they were a really hardworking, gigging band. They had played around 500 gigs over 5 years before releasing anything and built up a genuine fan base. I say this to artists on a daily basis. You can’t release music and expect people to buy it, you have to have a fanbase, which means gigging, blogging, MySpace, everything. And you have to be relentless at it for a long time, which is what Koopa did. They spent NO money on PR, we actually did the release for them for free as they didn’t have any money at all. Quite Great got in touch with Koopa on the Monday that they had charted and offered to work for them for free, based on them receiving more work in the long run. Our company acts as an umbrella company. We hold no rights to the music. We simply distribute through our record label, handle their Catco / PPL , making them chart eligible. We had a great discussion about this with Andrew Dubber of New Music Strategies, he also came on our TV show, we resolved it in the end, the link is here. http://newmusicstrategies.com/2007/02/27/the-real-story-of-koopa/ This is a paraphrase Being a record label is really a technicality that Catco need to register a song for release. It has to be attached to a PPL label member for the sake of airplay royalties. You cannot register a song without using Catco and you cannot get a Catco login and the necessary codes to use without being a PPL label member. It does seem that there is an oxymoron in saying the first unsigned band in the charts seeing as technically you have to be released through a label to chart. In fact, Koopa have a non-exclusive distribution agreement with us, we do not hold any rights to their songs. They did not sign over the rights to their songs in return for releasing and commercial vantage. So I feel that they were unsigned but I welcome any points raised to counter that argument. In reality Koopa were a really hardworking unsigned band that were in the right place at the right time. The media saw a news story and didn’t research it. As far as they were concerned , this new unsigned band had sold downloads and got into the charts. They had no idea that you had to be chart eligible, why you had to be, or how Koopa managed to be. We helped them have another 2 top 40 singles and they eventually signed a record deal with Pied Piper records in the states, recording their debut album with Mark from Blink 182. And on the back of that , our company had 7 top 40 singles, all with unsigned artists and our new model of distribution has had serious knock on effects to the whole industry, making it much easier for an independent artist to release music and putting them on a level playing field to signed artists. I think any unsigned band that does something significant should be applauded and there is room for everyone in the music industry , so praise needs to go out to everyone who is working hard at their craft. If check my blog you can see more details of Koopa release along with sales figures , how we helped them with bundling and pre release etc. http://dittomusic.com/leedittoblog/ If anyone has any questions feel free to contact me direct on lee@dittomusic.com Best Lee

"Like the Monkeys meets Nirvana" NME
"One of the most exciting new bands to come out of Manchester in ages, and i ought to know i've listened to hundreds of them since we started this thing." Danny McNamara - The Aftershow / Embrace
''El Policia are the rock band that Manchester's been waiting for, a band where the music matches the image and the haircuts and are prepared to make a riotous noise rather than a emo slitting Black Parade.'' - Designer Magazine
''And they've got some decent songs too - gritty, energetic power-pop tunes whose punk roots are very much in the British suburbia of the 1977 second wave.'' - www.manchestermusic.co.uk
''Manchester’s next big thing EL POLICIA, definitely ones for the future! ''Roadhouse
''THE AGGRESSIVE PUNK DRIVEN 'MISS MY YOUTH’ HIGHLIGHTS THEIR SAID POTENTIAL; TIGHT GUITARS WOVEN AROUND DIRTY BASS RIFFS TO BRING A CLASH MEETS STROKES SOUND'' - PANIK! ATTACK!
Selfish Cunt take the stage dwarfed by Motorhead’s Marshall stacks - that probably go up to 11 - and render them irrelevant. A black hole opens - and screams - YOU’VE GOT IT ALL WRONG! Right from the start there’s a misunderstanding about what you’re expecting and what you’re going to get.
Selfish Cunt delivered a set of astonishing intensity - enough to make your hepatitis ache - that made good on Jarvis Cocker’s promise that this year’s Meltdown Festival “shall rouse you from your slumber”. Martin Tomlinson cracked the microphone whip while Patrick Constable, Matthew Saw and Bambi inserted an adrenaline drip of high frequency feedback, erotic guitar pleads, and metabolic fury. Daring to slow down, bend over, speed up, screech and swarm, Tomlinson sang of dark desires, unsettling sexuality and the stink of money. This was an object lesson for schizophrenics - freaked outness - Pan pranced across the stage and pricked you out!
This is Selfish Cunt. They are an intensity - driving a demon machine - who prance and play like they couldn’t give a shit that Motorhead are hanging out backstage waiting to have their cocks licked under the lights of the Royal Box.
CHUCK FARTHING The musical equivelant of a curry, hotpot, haggis and pizza.... or in the quick thinking of mr. sam buckley... HOTPOT ROCK! come arrrrnnnnnnnnn - OR CHECK OUT THEIR TRACKS HERE
BRIGHT KICKS 2008 looks to be an exciting year for manchester's 'Battle Of The Band' (bury met 2007) WINNERS, 'Bright Kicks', consisting of four focused and ambitious souls drawn together through a mutual passion of music.
After all cutting their teeth in previous bands for a few years around manchester, ther origins begin with darryn clarke (guitar) and david whitworth (drums) locked away in a rehearsal room jamming the hours away, first and foremeost for the enjoyment of simply being able to play music again. gradually, as the weeks, months passed by, without a care for the outside world or latest flavour of the month, this rejuvinated state of mind was quietly spawning new material both were new to and stimulated by at the same time.
With a hefty selection of new music laid out, the time was to begin recruiting and see how a voice would fit on top of their latest sound. forward 6 months, empty promises and general false starts that had to be nipped in the bud, still no vocalist. that is of course, until a promising assured singer from Didsbury chased an ad up. Enter vocalist Bobby Magee, inspired by the likes of Robert Plant,Roger Daltry to Ray Charles and James Brown he has developed an individual style with clear soulful melodies, mix this together with an undeniable stage presence and talent that craves to be on stage holding a mic,you find thankfully not another Ian Brown, not another Liam Gallagher, but a new individual. All that was needed now was bass duties. And so a few more months pass, the odd bass player arrives, but no joy. until Bobby invites a 'friend of a friend' down to jam. Enter Greg Kelly, hailing from reddish. Never one who followed the 'mad fer it' crowd, greg was schooled on funk, jazz, reggae while also tipping his hat to rock ensures bass playing beyond his years.
So with the complete lineup 'Bright Kicks' finally stepped out of the shadows at the attic Manchester at the tail end of December 06. And the long wait proved justified. within a year of solid gigging around the north west the band were already making noises. Even when sharing gig slots with signed bands, one noteable occasion found the headliners in the front row dancing away to the bright kicks sound. Elsewhere One of the biggest crowds the band played to was at a student festival. A last minute reshuffle saw the band effortlessly play as a 3 piece with no bass. With momentum gathering, and being courted by various london management companies the band eventually decided to keep things closer to home signing with newly formed elev8 artists. rumours of major record label interest have sparked a small ever growing fanbase, keen for the antidote of the diluted sound of local accents on the radio singing about myspace. Big name producers have given them the thumbs up and are keen to get on board as the band are making plans to record their debut album.
SEIZURES Seizures formed in early 2008. We will make you dance. (NOTE: Debut gig for Seizures - previous Designer Magazine debut gigs include Carlis Star, El Policia, The Tigerpicks - and early gigs from Dear Eskiimo (now the Ting Tings), Kids In Glass Houses, The Displacements, Brigade etc)
FIVE PAST FIVE Fivepastfive are a fun, upbeat acoustic pop punk band from the suburbs of Manchester that carry a driving, yet thoughtful and melancholic sound filled with rich melodies and foot-tapping tempos. The band draws their influences from such bands as Fall Out Boy, Jimmy Eat World, Panic! At The Disco and Reel Big Fish, giving the band their instantly recognisable Pop-Punk sound.
Fivepastfive began as a mere side-project in 2004 to keep Ben Townley and Chris Lea busy while the rest of their current band (The Alibi) were away at university. As the band slowly dwindled away due to commitments, the duo teamed up with Dale Penlington on drums, who had just departed his current band at the time. Now a trio, Fivepastfive began playing more and more gigs round the Manchester area, slowly, but surely increasing their profile. A year later, the band go into a local studio to record their first EP. Upon hearing the final masters, they felt it was time to recruit a bassist in order to ’fill out the band’s sound’. Two months later, Fivepastfive became a quartet with bassist Joe Beswick.
Since being together, the band have recorded two EPs and have gigged heavily around the Manchester area. A couple of the band’s highlights have been winning £1,000 at a battle of the bands competition, plus being featured on the well-established internet station ‘Pulse-Rated’.
The band are currently promoting their second EP, ‘Bigger! Than! Godzilla!’ available at the band's online shop.....
