Although the interview with La La was great, the writer of the article started off with a major inaccuracy, and hopefully will do her homework for future interviews - though this may seem like a minor issue with some folks, it is a major sorepoint with those of us who try to correct so many inaccuracies about girl group singers and their history:
>>>>Brooklyn raised La La Brooks is the original lead singer of The Crystals, the girl group famous for the hits Da Doo Ron Ron and Then He Kissed Me (featured in Goodfellas).<<<<<<
NOT TRUE and La La even pointed to that in her statements.
The original lead singer was Barbara Alston and her voice is the one heard on their very first hits "There's No Other (Like My Baby)" and "Uptown". What La La said about Barbara is true - she was shy and preferred not being out front like that and had no problems with La La eventually taking over as lead singer. But the fact remains that on record, she is the original lead singer.
Furthermore, even before La La's leads were heard on their releases, Darlene Love was pulled in as lead on their next two hits "He's A Rebel" and "He's Sure The Boy I Love". Darlene was never a member of the group & the girls resented the deception pulled by Phil, but of course.....the songs are major classics and only added to the overall popularity of the group.
So, effectively, The Crystals had 4 major hits before La La took over as permanent lead. La La is fantastic, but Barbara Alston also needs to get credit for those two early classic songs. She has just released her autobiography, aptly entitled "There's Not Other" by Barbara Alston.
